OPENING AFL CLASH HARDLY EXCITING

The AFL season is opening with a decidedly low-key encounter between Carlton and Richmond at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday night.

The Blues finished last, with just two victories last season, while the Tigers were the minor premiers.

Although Carlton is showing signs of improvement the team, with numerous young and inexperienced players, can hardly be expected to compete for four quarters against Richmond which will be fielding a formidable side.

The situation improves on Friday, however, when Collingwood meets an old adversary in Geelong at the M.C.G.

This match should prove to be the highlight of the round with the seven games being played on Saturday and Sunday hardly likely to have the blood tingling.
