NRL Round 5 Selections by Graeme Kelly

Melbourne captain Cameron Smith is already one of the most celebrated and distinguished players in the NRL.

On Friday night against North Queensland at 1300Smiles Stadium at Townsville Smith should add another significant milestone to his curriculum vitae.

For he goes into the match just two points behind Hazem El Masri’s all-time points scoring record of 2,418 established over a 317- game career while Smith has represented the Storm on 388 occasions.

Everything going to plan when the Storm play the Dragons in Round 16 on July 4 Smith, who will turn 36 in June, will reach another significant high point by becoming the first NRL player to participate in 400 games.

With the Cowboys really struggling the Storm can be expected to celebrate Smith’s achievement by scoring the easiest of wins.

In a rather lack lustre round the most exciting clash appears likely to be between Newcastle and Manly at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday.

With the home ground advantage the Knights might just be able to prove superior.
