There is one thing Victorian racing cannot afford this Melbourne Cup Day, and that is another horse death following the very public demise of The Cliffsofmoher in last year’s race.
Racing may not be facing an existential crisis, but its participants have in recent weeks been asked to think seriously not just about how the sport presents itself, but how it conducts its entire operations.
There are legitimate inquiries about animal welfare, about the way horses are trained, about the way they are treated when their productive working life as a racetrack competitor is finished.
