On the third Saturday of May, VRC treasurer Michael Ramsden often wishes he could be in two places at once: Flemington, where the Melbourne Cup trial now known as the Andrew Ramsden Stakes is being run, and Morphettville in Adelaide where the group 1 Goodwood is staged.
At Flemington, the 3200-metre Cup trial is named after Ramsden’s late father, a former chairman of the VRC; at Morphettville, the star sprinter of whom he is a part owner, Santa Ana Lane, has been a regular Goodwood participant and is due to go around again this weekend.
Sadly for Ramsden – and all racing fans – he cannot be at either track given the restrictions placed upon the sport because of the coronavirus pandemic.
