McEvoy wants South Australian carnival to regain its former lustre by Michael Lynch

One of Victoria’s top trainers, Tony McEvoy, has been based at his “other” operation in the Barossa Valley for the past month and is more convinced than ever that the Adelaide racing carnival should be revamped to give it the status it once had.

McEvoy, who grew up in South Australia and was a jockey and then part of the Colin Hayes-training dynasty at Angaston, is delighted that Morphettville will be the focus for Australian racing this weekend when it stages two group 1 contests, the TAB Classic for fillies and mares and the Schweppes Australasian Oaks.

He will saddle up the star sprinter Sunlight in the former and Silent Sovereign in the Oaks, and is optimistic that both will perform well even though Sunlight, one of the best horses in the country, has to defy the outside barrier of 16 in her group 1 test.
