Kew Gardens, the Irish-trained winner of the English St Leger, is the top weight for this year’s Melbourne Cup, while Godolphin-owned imports Avilius and the veteran Hartnell head the weights for the Caulfield Cup.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained galloper Kew Gardens will have to to shoulder 58 kilograms if he does come to Australia to try to become the Coolmore head trainer’s first winner of Australia’s greatest race.
Unsurprisingly, given the dearth of Australian stayers, European imports and foreign-trained horses dominate the weights for the $8 million Melbourne Cup, which has 152 entries from this country, New Zealand, England, Ireland, France and Japan.
