Japanese mare Lys Gracieux is on target for a $2 million bonus if she can win the $5 million Cox Plate, thanks to the federal Agriculture Department, which has granted her an exemption to travel to Australia after she competed in Hong Kong earlier this year.
The five-year-old mare, trained by Yoshito Yahagi, received the invitation to the 2019 Cox Plate because she won the Japan Racing Association’s group 1 Takarazuka Kinen over 2200m in June, a race in which she was ridden by Melbourne-based jockey Damian Lane.
She is the first horse to become eligible for the $2 million bonus by winning one of the key overseas lead-up events.
