The Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale has had been on an incredible upward trend over the last five years.

The sale, which can lay claim to having Australia’s two highest stakes winners the mighty Winx and dual TAB The Everest winner Redzel as graduates, has more than doubled its gross in the period from 2014 to 2018.

Especially pleasing for Gerry Harvey and Katie Page-Harvey the sale figures of Book 1 have been on a steady upward trend over those years.

In 2014 663 yearlings were catalogued and 521 were sold for a gross of $75,082,500.

The average that year was $144,112, the median $120,000 and the top price was $1 million.

A year later 692 yearlings were scheduled for sale with 539 selling for a total of $92,022,500.

The average was $170,728, the median $130,000 and the top price paid was $1.2 million.

Another 12 months further on Book 1 contained 746 yearlings of which 592 sold for $115,806,000.

That resulted in an average $195,616, a median of $150,000 and a colt selling for a record $1.6 million and a filly bringing $1.4 million.

In 2017, 816 yearlings were booked for sale.

That year 649 were sold for $134,292,500, an average of $206,922 and a median of $160,000.

However, the statistics for the most expensive lots were slightly down with a colt bringing $1.3 million and a filly $1.2 million.

Last year 684 of the of the 853 lots in Book 1 brought $155,952,000 for an average of $228,000 and a median of $170,000.

The prices paid for the most eagerly sought-after yearlings soared with colts by I Am Invincible being knocked down for $2 million and $1.9 million and a filly by Snitzel going for $1.8 million.

A notable feature of the sale is that over the last five years the percentage of yearlings sold has always been in the 80s.

In 2014 the clearance rate was 87 per cent, in 2015 it was 86, in 2016 it was 89, in 2017 87 per cent of lots changed hands and last year 89 per cent were sold.

The 2019 sale begins on January 9 when 888 yearlings have been listed for sale in Book 1.
