His eyes had a mischievous twinkle, and if he was feeling the ill effects of a 60-hour journey from the Ballydoyle base of the master trainer Aidan O’Brien, then TJ Comerford, O’Brien’s travelling foreman, certainly wasn’t showing it when he supervised his five horses in light exercise at Werribee’s International Horse Centre.
Comerford is no stranger to the place where the international spring carnival challengers serve out their quarantine period to prepare for their assaults on some of Australian racing’s greatest prizes, having travelled here before on several occasions with Coolmore gallopers.
This time, he admitted, his journey to the other side of the world was probably the toughest trip he has had.
