When this racing season began Grahame Begg’s 2018 Blue Diamond winner Written By was expected to play a leading role in the ranks of the three-year-old sprinters.
But he has been eclipsed by the flying filly Sunlight, who beat him in the Group 1 Coolmore down the Flemington straight in the spring, Tony McEvoy’s speedster then going on to prove her class by beating her elders in the Newmarket Handicap.
It’s not surprising that she is all the rage with bookmakers and punters for the last group 1 of the Victorian season, Friday night’s 1200-metre William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley, with Written By at much longer odds.
