Cummings survives inquiry scare to win race named after grandfather Bart by Michael Lynch

Godolphin trainer James Cummings will get the chance to emulate his grandfather Bart in the Melbourne Cup after his imported galloper Avilius survived a stewards inquiry to take out the race named after the legendary Bart Cummings at the track with which his name is synonymous, Flemington.

Cummings senior was a master of understatement and didn’t like too many dramas where his horses were concerned.

But his grandson had to endure a nail biting finale to the theatre that was the 2500-metre Bart Cummings after Avienus and Jaameh, who finished a short half head behind him, came close and brushed in the final stages of the race as both Glyn Schofield, aboard Avilius, and Michael Walker, on the David Hayes-trained Jaameh, threw everything at their mounts.
