Conners, an example of racing’s squeezed middle class, calls it quits by Michael Lynch

They’re Victorian racing’s squeezed middle class – those who are “just managing”, barely keeping their heads above water in turbulent economic times.

Except that some “just aren’t”.

They are those middle-ranking horse trainers, the ones who struggle to match their revenues with their spending. They have enough horses to justify running a business of their own but not enough good ones to turn a significant profit and make it worthwhile.
