Beckett one-two as Mr Chaplin wins Jaeger-LeCoultre Nursery

Hampshire trainer Ralph Beckett saddled the first and second in the Jaeger-LeCoultre Nursery Handicap, as Mr Chaplin snatched victory from Original Outlaw.

Original Outlaw seemed set for victory after pulling clear from his 15 rivals, but his stablemate (10/1), who still had six horses to pass at the furlong marker, found reserves to swoop late under Rossa Ryan and land the spoils by a neck.

The 11/4 favourite El Burhan was another length and a half further back in third, while Sunshine State finished fourth.

Beckett said: “To win from that draw [12] takes a bit of doing. The Gunthers own half of Original Outlaw but bred Without Parole [Mr Chaplin’s sire], so they will have mixed feelings as well! But they have a nice horse on their hands. I thought the second was my best chance of the day, not the winner, because of the draw. But the winner might be better than I thought he was.

“I don’t think Original Outlaw was stopping – the reason he hasn’t got it done in maidens or novices is that he needs this kind of test; the big field suited him today. The race kind of fell apart in front of him and Hector had to kick on. The winner did it really well from that draw. He was never given any luck and he might be a bit better than we thought. I didn’t think he had it in him.

“I think we would be keen – if all the owners are on board – to maybe go to the seven-furlong nursery at the Ebor meeting with Original Outlaw. I hope after today he has worked out what’s required. I didn’t feel he had up until now.”

Ryan said: “I had the most terrible run round. Mr Chaplin would have been a very unlucky story from a bad draw. He has to be a decent animal to do what he did.

“The Coventry Stakes didn’t work out for him, but he was crying out for this trip and a mile might be on the cards soon.

“He is a lovely horse and one to keep on the right side of in future.”

George Boughey said of El Burhan: “He definitely wants the mile and the ground was probably too lively for him. He is still a nice horse, who is learning.”

Thady Gosden issued an update following favourite Emily Upjohn’s sixth place in the Qatar Nassau Stakes. He said: “We were drawn in stall 10, which is never ideal here. She was a touch slowly away but travelled well in the early part of the race. Coming down the hill, she did not pick up how you would have expected her to do. She seems fine afterwards.

“Naturally, when you start favourite, let alone for a Group One, if they don’t quite run how you expect them too, it’s disappointing. She is in good condition afterwards and did not take long to cool down. We move on. The Yorkshire Oaks on a very fair track is a race which would suit her well.”
