Anzac spirit extended to Kiwis, who now get to run in the Jericho Cup by Michael Lynch

It’s only fitting, in the true spirit of Anzac, New Zealand gallopers will now get the chance to qualify for the Jericho Cup, Australia’s longest flat race.

The 4600-metre, stamina-sapping test was inaugurated at Warrnambool last year, a revival of a race first staged by Australian soldiers in Palestine in 1918, during World War I.

The first Jericho Cup was a centenary commemoration of the Australian and New Zealand light-horse involvement in the First World War and is designed to be the centrepiece of a Warrnambool meeting on December 1, when the seaside town is gearing up for the summer holiday season.
