ENGLISH ST LEGER MEETING [Day 1] By Carlo Zuccoli

Doncaster, Wednesday September 12th 2018

going good to soft,

1.50PM GMT: British Stallion Studs EBF Conditions Stakes, Class 2, 6f2y, for 2yo with a total prize money of £ 18.000.

On paper Khadeem (IRE) (Dark Angel), paid Guineas 750.000 at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales, Book 1, by HE Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, trained by Charlie Hills and ridden by the retained jockey Jim Crowley will take a lot of beating. His Timeform Rating adjusted for the race is 109P (the capital P means that the horse is almost certainly capable of much better): he is entered in the Mill Reef Stakes and in the Middle Park Stakes. It’s very difficult to select a horse for the exacta. Khadeem is my nap of the day and if you can get 6/4 or bigger have a go. The pace should be even,

2.25 GMT Owlerton Greyhound Stadium Nursery Handicap,

Class 2, 7f6y, for 2yo with a total prize money of £ 18.000.

Another clear favourite for HE but this time the horse, Fanaar (IRE) (Dark Angel), paid Guineas 240.000 at Goffs Doncaster Premier Yearling Sales, is trained at Newmarket by William Haggas, whose percentage of winners to runners is 22%. The horse ran badly at York last time out on August 23rd , but he was badly positioned during the race: he is now at 11/4. An improver could be Concello (IRE) (Society Rock), trained at Upper Lambourn, West Berkshire, by the in-form Archie Watson (his percentage of winners to runners is 22% but in the last 14 days he won 7 races out of 30 runners): be careful because this horse is not straightforward, but he is at 3/1. Once again, the pace should be even.

3.00 GMT, D C Training And Development Services Scarborough Stakes, Listed, 5f3y, for 2yo+, with a total prize money of £ 40.000.

A very strong pace is assured. Favourites should fare well during the first day of the Meeting and El Astronaute (IRE) (Approve), 5, is my next best of the day. Trained by John Quinn at Settrington, North Yorkshire, who has a very low percentage of winners to runners, this horse is a smart handicapper, goes on any surface and on any ground and he is a front runner (11/4).

4.05 GMT EBF Breeders’ Series Fillies Handicap, Class 2, 1m3f197y, for 3yo+ fillies and mares, Rated 0 – 100, with a total prize money of £ 30.000.

I give a lot of credit to Crystal Hope (GB) (Nathaniel), 3, who is a half-sister to Crystal Ocean (GB) (Sea The Stars), 4, second in the King George, Gr-1, and second again to Enable (GB) (Nathaniel), giving her 8 Pounds, last Saturday at Kempton Park, on polytrack, in the Group 3 September Stakes. This filly finished third in a Listed Race at Newbury behind the extremely good Sea Of Class (IRE) (Sea The Stars), 3, a Group 1 winner, who is one of the favourites for the Arc de Triomphe. Crystal Hope should have the distance of this race in her sight: 4/1 her price. Theoretically Lady Of Shalott (GB) (Camelot), 3, could run a big race if she will recover her form now running in a Handicap: her price is 14/1. The pace should be even.

4.40 GMT William Hill Leading Racecourse Bookmaker Conditions Stakes, Class 2, 11/4m43y, for 3yo+, with a total prize money of £ 19.000.

According to the Timeform, Euginio (IRE) (Fastnet Rock), 4, should have this race in his pocket, having a Rating of 128. He is a front runner and he had blinkers on for his last four starts: now no head gear on: 15/8 his price. Reading the form of the horses the pace should be very weak so it could be possible that Euginio will be able to dictate untroubled by the others: Ryan Moore on board is a plus.
