Flemington trainer Mike Moroney and his bloodstock agent brother Paul have smashed records at Newmarket overnight by shelling out almost $2 million at the horses in training sale for a galloper they hope will emulate the feats of this year’s Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet.
Moroney said on Thursday that the horse in question – English King – will land in Australia in December and could, depending on how he settles in after quarantine, be given a light autumn campaign.
But his big target next year will be the Cox Plate, which was won by a horse with a very similar profile, the ex-Aidan O’Brien-trained Sir Dragonet, now trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.
