Newcastle trainer Kris Lees looks to hold the key to the Thousand Guineas with favourite Smart Melody and stablemate El Dorado Dreaming confirming they will be big players in the fillies classic when they ran first and third in the Prelude at Caulfield.
They were separated by the Troy Corstens trained Thrillster, who tried valiantly in the straight to run down Smart Melody but could never quite get close enough to land a blow.
Sydney champion rider Brenton Avdulla has a huge opinion of Smart Melody, and he travelled south to ride her in what was a test to see whether she might get the 1600 metres of the Guineas, which is 200 metres further than the 1400 metre Prelude.
